Scans for open source database

Message par TonySandlin »

Hi there! I am seeking scans for French cards for use in an online database. The goal is to document every card in every language so that it is easy to see what cards exist. I'm looking for people who have a large collection and would like to help with the scans. Below, I listed the guidelines for what we are looking for. Please send me a PM or email me at [email protected] if you are interested in helping out. Thanks for the help!

Current Scan Requirements

Scans must be at 600 dpi resolution
Disable any automatic image correction options (color: such as but not limited to color and contrast adjustment, dust and scratch removal, unsharp mask, and Descreen settings)
Save as PNG filetype
The Entire card must be visible, on all edges
Cards must be in Excellent (EX) or better condition
Images can not have excessive glaring hindering the ability to see the card itself
Scans' may contain more than one card per image file, but need to be of the same set and ought to be in consecutive order (ex: Base Set 1-9 scans on one page is scanned okay - Base 12.56, 90,31,47 on one page would not be)
When sending scans, please group together by set in a folder
For the time being, only full set scans will be accepted.

Additional Things to Remember

For foil cards try to reduce off-color reflections and glare. This may require turning a card on the scanner to get a different angle. It may take a few scans to get the best results. Below are two examples, one with off-color reflections and the other with a white foil reflection (this is Desired).

Example with foil color:

Example without:

Credit in part to sczther for a bit of the information contained above, he got the ball rolling on this.

It is because we are looking for scans without the watermark or logo. We don't want to put our own logo on it haha It is open source so that the scans can be used freely by anyone without needing permission. I'd love to be able to use the ones from the website, but unfortunately, it won't meet the criteria for open source. Perhaps, there are unwatermarked versions?

Hey TonySandlin, welcome abroad!

_We currently have a hard time getting scans at 300 dpi, I may give you a guesstimate of 0 scans meeting your criteria of 600px
_All our scans are currently lossy JPEGs
_We cannot guarantee a fully visible card

On the technical side, our scans couldn't meet your criterias.

About the watermark, too many French eBay sellers are looking forward using our scans for their sellings. Although not crediting the community is a thing, the main issue is that those sellers are usually selling cards in a far from Mint state; by using one of our picture they are misleading their customers, part of those customers being our community.

On the political side, as of currently we cannot share unwatermarked scans to the public.

In case things are changing towards a favorable decision regarding your project, I'll come back to you!
In the meantime, I don't know if PidgiWiki still has some of the French Press assets. Those from HGSS to Plasma Blast were quite valuable for you (in Tiff format), the ones coming next have been downgraded and might not be worth ut.
Échanges faits: Rainyd, Lnoirriol, Pijako, Van der Clava, speedy60, Pijako, Fe2nek... je ne les compte plus.

Hi there! I appreciate the detailed response. I understand the concern for the eBay auctions as that can be a problem. Hopefully that can be circumvented by asking for real pictures of the cards instead of scans before purchasing. The reason we ask for no watermarks isn't so that we can claim them as our own, but rather, so that everyone can use them as they wish. In fact, you may use them as your own if we end up getting some that you might not have (which is probably not going to happen since this website has far more than we do haha). The database isn't meant to be a competing wiki. It will just host the scans and basic information about cards from every language.

If you decide you would like to help out in any way, I will be thankful. Thanks!

This is a beautiful project but isn't the official website (pokemon.com pokemon.fr ....) the best source for this ? All the cards from Diamond & Pearl (DP1) to Fates Collides (XY10) are here including promos.

for example : http://www.pokemon.com/fr/jcc-pokemon/c ... cedSubmit=

That is a great source for cards up to the Diamond and Pearl sets, but we'd like to include all sets as well as variations of them. Some expansions do not have reverse in some languages and some languages are not currently being printed, such as Chinese or Dutch. The other issue with that webiste is that it translates all cards even if they were not printed in that language. For example, there is a picture of the Plasma Electrode promo in German, Italian, French and Spanish, but it was only released in English and Japanese if I am correct.

That had me hunting down cards that never existed haha
Anyway, I appreciate the interest and I hope we can find enough scans to get a good database for French. So far we have a bunch of English, all Chinese, Dutch and Polish, and some Korean and Japanese.

Another thing that will be different from other databases; we will include scans of all variations, including reverse holo, serial code diffenences, errors, etc.
